Geography Vocabulary
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Geography Vocabulary" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on World Geography and Regions, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and five themes and geography terms never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this five themes and geography terms worksheet?
⌄
Start with The Five Themes of Geography, then use Geography Vocabulary as a reference. How Geography Shapes Settlement and Human-Environment Interaction each ask students to give reasons from a short text, so keep page 1 at hand.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Match twelve terms like hemisphere and urban to definitions, then complete sentences with them. The directions on the page read: Write the letter of the matching term in the box next to each definition. An answer key is included.
Can I use this five themes and geography terms worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade World Geography and Regions, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with five themes and geography terms. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is the difference between absolute and relative location?
⌄
Absolute location is an exact position, such as a latitude and longitude. Relative location describes a place compared to other places, such as two blocks west of a park. Both are terms on The Five Themes of Geography and Geography Vocabulary.
Why did people settle near rivers?
⌄
Rivers offered drinking water, fish, rich soil and an easy road for boats. How Geography Shapes Settlement also explains why towns grew at harbors, crossroads and mountain passes, and why few cities began in deserts.
What are examples of people adapting to and modifying the environment?
⌄
Building houses on stilts in places that flood is adapting. Cutting terraces into hillsides or building a dam is modifying. Human-Environment Interaction also shows how the Dutch built polders on low, wet land.
