Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Cause and Effect Essay Planner" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core W.6.2.A. If your student is a year younger but already steady on informative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Plan a cause and effect essay on a town that loses its trees with three effects and evidence. A cause and effect essay explains why something happens and what results from it. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Follow the chain from Step 1 to Step 5. Write the cause, then three effects with a fact that supports each one, then your conclusion. An answer key is included.

Can I use this informative essays worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade informative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with informative essays. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a topic sentence?

⌄

A topic sentence states the main idea of a paragraph, and every detail supports it. Topic Sentences and Details has students write topic sentences for 4 detail groups, then cross out the one off-topic sentence in each of 4 paragraphs.

How do you organize a compare and contrast essay?

⌄

Use a point by point plan, one feature at a time, or a block plan, one subject at a time. Compare and Contrast Essay Planner starts with Venn notes on frogs and toads, then plans three body paragraphs.

What is a hamburger paragraph?

⌄

It is a model for an informative paragraph: a topic sentence as the top bun, facts with explanations in the middle and a closing sentence as the bottom bun. Informative Paragraph Organizer uses it to explain how a volcano forms.
