Write Compound-Complex Sentences

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Write Compound-Complex Sentences" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.3.A. If your student is a year younger but already steady on sentences, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and simple, compound & complex sentences never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this simple, compound & complex sentences worksheet?

⌄

Review clauses first with the phrases and clauses sheets. Then label sentence types before asking students to write their own compound-complex sentences.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Combine 6 sets of three short sentences into compound-complex sentences, starting with a storm. A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. The directions on the page read: Combine each set into one compound-complex sentence on the lines. Use a word like because, when or although and a word like and, but or so. An answer key is included.

Can I use this simple, compound & complex sentences worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade sentences, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with simple, compound & complex sentences. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are the four sentence types?

⌄

A simple sentence has one independent clause, a compound sentence has two or more, a complex sentence has one independent and one or more dependent clauses, and a compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

How do you write a compound-complex sentence?

⌄

Use a word like because, when or although for the dependent clause and a word like and, but or so to join the independent clauses. When the storm knocked out the power, we lit candles, and Grandma told stories.

Is a sentence with two verbs always compound?

⌄

No. Sofia and Ben hiked to the falls and ate lunch by the pool has two verbs but only one clause, so it is simple.
