Form the Perfect Tenses

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Form the Perfect Tenses" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on verbs, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and perfect tenses never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this perfect tenses worksheet?

⌄

Start with the forms table, especially the irregular participles. Then use the time clue sheet before reading The Big Recital.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Write 8 verbs like swim, freeze and teach in the present perfect, past perfect and future perfect. Each perfect tense is a form of have plus the past participle: has or have for present, had for past and will have for future. The directions on the page read: Write each verb in the present perfect, past perfect and future perfect tense. Follow the gray example row for walk. An answer key is included.

Can I use this perfect tenses worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade verbs, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with perfect tenses. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What time clues signal each perfect tense?

⌄

Since, for and so far signal present perfect, before or by the time in the past signal past perfect, and by a future time signals future perfect. Choose the Perfect Tense lists these clues.

What is the past participle of swim?

⌄

The past participle of swim is swum, so the perfect forms are has swum, had swum and will have swum.

What is the future perfect progressive?

⌄

It shows an action that will have kept going up to a future time, as in By Saturday, Amara will have been preparing for this recital for three months.
