Round Millions to the Underlined Place
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

⌄

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Round 20 numbers like 48,973,864 and 355,663,528 to the place of the underlined digit. The directions on the page read: Round each number to the place of the underlined digit. Use commas. An answer key is included.
Can I use this rounding large numbers worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade place value & rounding, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with rounding large numbers. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you round to the underlined digit?
⌄
Look at the digit just to its right. If it is 5 or more, round up, and if it is 4 or less, keep the underlined digit, then write zeros after it. 2,002,596 rounded at the thousands digit is 2,003,000.
What happens when a 9 rounds up?
⌄
It becomes 0 and the next place to the left goes up by 1. On Round Numbers Up to 10 Billion, 4,275,996,186 rounded to the millions place is 4,276,000,000.
Why practice rounding numbers this big?
⌄
Rounding large numbers helps with estimating and with reading data like populations and distances. It also reviews place value names up to the billions.
