Read Scientific Notation in Standard Form
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Read Scientific Notation in Standard Form" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on place value & rounding, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and scientific notation never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: write 16 numbers like 4.7 × 10 to the 3rd power and 7.721 × 10 to the 8th power in standard form. Answer key included. Part of our scientific notation place value & rounding collection.
How do I use this worksheet?
Begin with Write Large Numbers in Scientific Notation, then reverse the skill with Read Scientific Notation in Standard Form. The two billions sheets work as extension practice for fast finishers.
What students will practice
- Students will write 16 numbers in scientific notation, with exponents from 3 to 8, in standard form.
- Students will move the decimal point right as many places as the exponent shows.
- Students will write answers with commas, such as 9.064 × 10 to the 7th power = 90,640,000.

FAQ
How do I use this scientific notation worksheet?
⌄
Begin with Write Large Numbers in Scientific Notation, then reverse the skill with Read Scientific Notation in Standard Form. The two billions sheets work as extension practice for fast finishers.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Write 16 numbers like 4.7 × 10 to the 3rd power and 7.721 × 10 to the 8th power in standard form. In scientific notation, the exponent of 10 tells how many places to move the decimal point to the right: 2.5 × 10 3 = 2,500. The directions on the page read: Write each number in standard form. Use commas. An answer key is included.
Can I use this scientific notation worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade place value & rounding, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with scientific notation. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What makes a number scientific notation?
⌄
The first factor must be at least 1 and less than 10, and the second factor is a power of 10. 9.7 × 10 to the 8th power is scientific notation, but 97 × 10 to the 7th power is not.
How do you change scientific notation to standard form?
⌄
Move the decimal point to the right as many places as the exponent and fill empty places with zeros. 2.5 × 10 to the 3rd power = 2,500, and 4.853644 × 10 to the 10th power = 48,536,440,000.
Is scientific notation a 6th grade skill?
⌄
It is usually taught in 8th grade. These pages use only large whole numbers and positive exponents, which suits students who already know place value into the billions.
