Find Unit Rates With Decimal Quantities

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Find Unit Rates With Decimal Quantities" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.RP.A.2. If your student is a year younger but already steady on ratios, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and rates and unit rates never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this rates and unit rates worksheet?

⌄

Start with Find the Unit Rate so dividing for 1 unit is familiar before the better buy and comparison pages. Use the unit analysis pages last, and have students write the units with every answer, such as feet per second.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Find 6 unit rates with decimal quantities, such as 13.5 miles in 3 hours and $7.20 for 4.5 pounds. A unit rate compares a quantity to 1 unit of another quantity, such as 12 pages per day. The directions on the page read: Find each unit rate. Divide, and show your work in the space under each rate. Write money to the cent. An answer key is included.

Can I use this rates and unit rates worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade ratios, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with rates and unit rates. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you find a unit rate?

⌄

Divide the first quantity by the second. Ava drove 186 miles in 3 hours, so 186 ÷ 3 = 62 miles per hour. A hose that fills a 150-liter tank in 8 minutes flows 18.75 liters per minute.

How do you find the better buy?

⌄

Find the unit price of each package by dividing the price by the number of units, then pick the lower one. Cereal at 12 oz for $3.48 is $0.29 per oz and 18 oz for $4.99 is $0.28 per oz, so the larger box is the better buy.

How do you convert a rate with unit analysis?

⌄

Multiply by a conversion factor written as a fraction so the old unit cancels. 120 feet per minute × (1 minute over 60 seconds) = 2 feet per second.

Why is a percent a rate?

⌄

A percent is a rate per 100. On a hundred grid each square is 1 percent, so 37 shaded squares are 37%, 37/100 or 0.37.
