Scale Drawings and Ratios

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Scale Drawings and Ratios" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.RP.A.3. If your student is a year younger but already steady on ratios, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and ratio word problems never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this ratio word problems worksheet?

⌄

Print the page and read the directions with your child: Use the scale to find the real length of each part. Then answer questions 7 and 8 by working backward from real feet to drawing inches. When they finish, check the work together with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

A note explains that a scale is a ratio that compares drawing lengths to real lengths. A house plan drawn at 1 inch : 4 feet has a table of six parts, such as a living room length of 5 inches and a front door width of 0.75 inch, to change to real feet. Two more problems work backward from real feet to drawing inches. The directions on the page read: Use the scale to find the real length of each part. Then answer questions 7 and 8 by working backward from real feet to drawing inches. An answer key is included.

Can I use this ratio word problems worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade ratios, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with ratio word problems. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you solve a ratio word problem?

⌄

Find how many times larger the new amount is, then scale the other amount the same way. A recipe uses 3 cups of flour for every 2 cups of milk, and 8 cups of milk is 4 times 2, so it takes 4 × 3 = 12 cups of flour.

What is a tape diagram?

⌄

It is a bar model where every unit box stands for the same amount. Boys to girls is 3 : 5 with 40 students, so 8 boxes hold 40 and each box is 5, which makes 25 girls.

How does a double number line help?

⌄

It lines up two quantities that grow at the same rate. A bus that travels 55 miles each hour is at 110 miles after 2 hours and 220 miles after 4 hours.
