Solid Shapes Builders Use

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Solid Shapes Builders Use" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on shapes, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and 3d shapes never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this 3d shapes worksheet?

⌄

Print the page and read the directions with your child: Trace the name of each solid shape. Then draw a line from the shape to the object that has the same shape. When they finish, check the work together with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Four solid shapes with their names in gray to trace: cube, cylinder, cone and sphere. Beside them are four real objects: a traffic cone, a ball, a block and a can. The directions on the page read: Trace the name of each solid shape. Then draw a line from the shape to the object that has the same shape. An answer key is included.

Can I use this 3d shapes worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten shapes, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with 3d shapes. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What 3D shapes do kindergarteners learn?

⌄

Kindergarteners name the cube, sphere, cone and cylinder. CCSS K.G.A.2 asks them to name a shape whatever its size and whichever way it is turned, so these pages show each solid big and small, standing up and lying down.

How can I help my child tell a cube from a sphere or a cylinder?

⌄

Hand your child a block, a ball and a can. A cube has flat square faces and stacks, a sphere is round all over and rolls every way, and a cylinder has 2 flat circles and rolls on its side. Then do the find and color pages, naming each solid out loud.

Does my child need to read or write words?

⌄

No. Children answer with colors, circles, lines and numerals, so an adult only needs to read the Instructions aloud. Solids on the real objects pages are labeled with their names.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. Each of the 12 sheets has an answer key that shows every colored or circled solid and each count.
