Loaded Words and Opinions

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Loaded Words and Opinions" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core RI.6.8. If your student is a year younger but already steady on comprehension exercises, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fact vs opinion never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this fact vs opinion worksheet?

⌄

Start with the national parks sort, then read the skate park article together. Use Loaded Words and Opinions to show how one word can tilt a sentence.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Circle the loaded word in 8 sentences, like disastrous or heroic, and rewrite each one neutrally. A loaded word carries strong good or bad feelings, so it pushes readers toward the writer's opinion instead of just stating the facts. The directions on the page read: Circle the loaded word in each sentence. Then rewrite the sentence on the lines so that it is neutral, using a plain word or leaving the loaded word out. An answer key is included.

Can I use this fact vs opinion worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade comprehension exercises, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fact vs opinion. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a reasoned judgment?

⌄

An opinion backed by a fact. Because summer temperatures in Death Valley often climb above 110 degrees, visitors should carry plenty of water is a reasoned judgment from Fact, Opinion or Reasoned Judgment.

What is a loaded word?

⌄

A word that carries strong good or bad feelings, like disastrous, heroic or scheme. Loaded Words and Opinions has students circle the loaded word in 8 sentences and rewrite each one neutrally.

How can students check whether a fact is true?

⌄

Ask where it could be looked up. In Spot Opinions in a News Article, a reader could check the $450,000 cost of the skate park in the city's records.
