How a Scene Fits the Whole Story

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"How a Scene Fits the Whole Story" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core RL.6.5. If your student is a year younger but already steady on comprehension exercises, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and identifying text structure never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

⌄

Explain how 3 scenes of Saturdays at the Garden and 3 stanzas of a maple tree poem fit together. Writers build a story out of scenes and a poem out of stanzas, and each part has a job in the whole, such as setting up a problem or showing a change. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Then answer the questions on page 2. An answer key is included.

Can I use this identifying text structure worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade comprehension exercises, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with identifying text structure. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are the 5 types of text structure?

Description, sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect and problem and solution. Name the Text Structure has students circle one for each of 6 paragraphs, from making paper by hand to Mae Jemison's life.

⌄

However and unlike signal compare and contrast, first and finally signal sequence, and as a result signals cause and effect. Signal Words for Text Structure sorts 15 of them into 5 columns.

Does text structure apply to stories and poems?

⌄

Yes. How a Scene Fits the Whole Story explains the 3 scenes of Saturdays at the Garden and the stanzas of The Maple Outside My Window.
