Build a Timeline From a Biography

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Build a Timeline From a Biography" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core RI.6.3. If your student is a year younger but already steady on comprehension exercises, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and sequencing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this sequencing worksheet?

⌄

Have students mark each flashback in The Star Quilt before they number the events. On the timeline sheet, ask them to underline every year as they read.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Build a 7-event timeline of Amelia Earhart's life, from 1897 to 1937, using her biography. A timeline shows events in the order they happened, with the date of each one, from earliest to latest. The directions on the page read: Read the biography. Then build a timeline of Amelia Earhart's life on page 2. An answer key is included.

Can I use this sequencing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade comprehension exercises, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with sequencing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a flashback?

⌄

A flashback interrupts a story to show something that happened earlier. The Star Quilt opens at the county fair, then jumps back to the winter Priya learned to sew.

How do you build a timeline from a biography?

⌄

Find the year of each event, then list them from earliest to latest. Build a Timeline From a Biography places 7 events, from Earhart's birth in 1897 to her disappearance in 1937.

Why would an author tell events out of order?

⌄

Starting in the middle can build suspense. The Star Quilt begins with Priya waiting for the judge, so readers feel her nerves before the flashback shows how hard she worked for the blue ribbon.
