Read an Article and a Bar Graph Together
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Read an Article and a Bar Graph Together" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core RI.6.7. If your student is a year younger but already steady on comprehension exercises, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and text and graphics never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this text and graphics worksheet?
⌄
Have students preview the graphic before reading the article. For each answer, ask whether it came from the text, the graphic or both.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read Where Does Our Trash Go with a bar graph of U.S. recycling rates from 1960 to 2018. A graph can show numbers from an article in a picture, and it may add facts that the words leave out. The directions on the page read: Read the article and study the bar graph. Then answer the questions on page 2. An answer key is included.
Can I use this text and graphics worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade comprehension exercises, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with text and graphics. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
Why read an article and a graphic together?
⌄
A graphic can add facts the words leave out. The bar graph in Read an Article and a Bar Graph Together shows the 1970 and 1980 recycling rates, which the article skips.
How does a map help with an article?
⌄
It shows where each place is. In Read an Article and a Map Together, the route map makes it clear how far the Corps traveled up the Missouri River to Fort Mandan.
What does a cross-section diagram show?
⌄
It shows the inside of something. Read an Article and a Diagram Together labels a volcano's magma chamber, main vent, side vent and layers of lava and ash.
