Fix Run-Ons and Comma Splices

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Fix Run-Ons and Comma Splices" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on sentences, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fragment, sentence or run-on? never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this fragment, sentence or run-on? worksheet?

⌄

Teach the three fixes with the run-on sheet, then switch to fragments. Edit a Paragraph for Run-Ons and Fragments makes a good follow up.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Fix 10 run-ons and comma splices with a period, a conjunction or a semicolon as each item asks. A run-on joins two complete sentences with no punctuation, and a comma splice joins them with only a comma. The directions on the page read: Each item is a run-on or a comma splice. Fix it the way the word in parentheses says and write the new sentence on the lines. An answer key is included.

Can I use this fragment, sentence or run-on? worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade sentences, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fragment, sentence or run-on?. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a comma splice?

⌄

A comma splice joins two complete sentences with only a comma, as in The test is tomorrow, I need to study tonight. It can be fixed with a period, a conjunction or a semicolon.

How do you fix a sentence fragment?

⌄

Add the missing subject, verb or thought. Because the bus was late becomes We missed the first bell because the bus was late.

Can a question be a complete sentence?

⌄

Yes. Is your homework finished? has a subject and a verb and is one of the 6 complete sentences in Fix Sentence Fragments.
