Rewrite Questions as Statistical Questions

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Rewrite Questions as Statistical Questions" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.SP.A.1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on data & graphing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and statistical questions and data sets never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this statistical questions and data sets worksheet?

⌄

Use the sorting page as a warm up, then have students rewrite questions. The data set summary page works well before measures of center.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Rewrite 6 single-answer questions like How old is Ava? as statistical questions about a group. A statistical question asks about a group of people or things and expects answers that vary. The directions on the page read: Each question has only one answer. Rewrite it as a statistical question about a group, so the answers vary. An answer key is included.

Can I use this statistical questions and data sets worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade data & graphing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with statistical questions and data sets. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What makes a question statistical?

⌄

A statistical question asks about a group and expects answers that vary. How much do the pumpkins at the farm stand weigh? is statistical. How many days are in a week? is not, because it has one answer.

How do you turn a question into a statistical question?

⌄

Ask it about a group or about many times instead of one. How old is Ava? becomes How old are the students in Ava's class? so the answers vary.

What does it mean to summarize a data set?

⌄

It means telling what was measured, the unit, the number of observations and how the data was collected. Hand spans measured with a ruler in centimeters for 21 students is one example on the page.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 3 worksheets in this group have an answer key.
