Divide Fractions With Models and Word Problems
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Divide Fractions With Models and Word Problems" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.NS.A.1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on fraction multiplication & division, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fraction word problems never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: mark equal groups on 4 shaded models and write the division, like 2 cups of juice in 1/4 cup glasses. Answer key included. Part of our fraction word problems collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with the model page so students can see why 2 ÷ 1/4 = 8. Then use the division word problems, and save the multi-step page for review.
What students will practice
- Students will mark equal groups the size of the divisor on 4 shaded models.
- Students will write each model as a division with fractions, such as 3 ÷ 3/4 = 4.
- Students will find how many 1/8 pound bags Santiago can fill from 3/4 pound of nuts.

FAQ
How do I use this fraction word problems worksheet?
⌄
Start with the model page so students can see why 2 ÷ 1/4 = 8. Then use the division word problems, and save the multi-step page for review.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Mark equal groups on 4 shaded models and write the division, like 2 cups of juice in 1/4 cup glasses. The directions on the page read: The shaded part of each model shows the amount. Mark equal groups the size of the divisor. Then write the division with fractions and the answer. An answer key is included.
Can I use this fraction word problems worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade fraction multiplication & division, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fraction word problems. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you know when to divide fractions in a word problem?
⌄
Divide when the problem asks how many parts of a given size fit in an amount. A 2 1/2 mile trail split into 5/8 mile parts has 2 1/2 ÷ 5/8 = 4 parts.
How does a model help with fraction division?
⌄
Shade the amount, then mark groups the size of the divisor and count them. Lily's 2 cups of juice fill 8 glasses that each hold 1/4 cup, so 2 ÷ 1/4 = 8.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 3 fraction word problem sheets have an answer key with every answer in simplest form.
