Subtract Positive and Negative Integers to 30

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Subtract Positive and Negative Integers to 30" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on integers, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and subtraction of integers never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this subtraction of integers worksheet?

⌄

Have students rewrite each problem as an addition before they solve it. Use the page to 10 first, then the page to 30 as a follow up or a quick check.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Subtract 24 pairs of integers from −30 to 30, such as (−16) − 30 and 15 − (−22). The directions on the page read: Find each difference. An answer key is included.

Can I use this subtraction of integers worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade integers, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with subtraction of integers. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you subtract a negative integer?

⌄

Change the subtraction to adding the opposite. 9 − (−7) becomes 9 + 7 = 16, and (−2) − (−6) becomes (−2) + 6 = 4.

Can subtracting give a bigger number?

⌄

Yes. Subtracting a negative number makes the answer larger, so 15 − (−22) = 37, which is greater than 15.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. Both subtraction of integers sheets have an answer key.
