Unit Rates Minutes per Task

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Unit Rates Minutes per Task" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.RP.A.3.B. If your student is a year younger but already steady on ratios, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and rates and unit rates never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this rates and unit rates worksheet?

⌄

Print the page and read the directions with your child: Find each unit rate. Show your work in the box. Write the answer on the line. When they finish, check the work together with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

A note explains that a unit rate tells how much of one quantity goes with 1 unit of another and that you divide to find it. Six problems use daily tasks: Jordan reads 36 pages in 48 minutes, Mia folds 15 shirts in 30 minutes, Sam walks 3 miles in 54 minutes, and Theo and Rae compare typing speeds. The directions on the page read: Find each unit rate. Show your work in the box. Write the answer on the line. An answer key is included.

Can I use this rates and unit rates worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade ratios, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with rates and unit rates. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you find a unit rate?

⌄

Divide the first quantity by the second. Ava drove 186 miles in 3 hours, so 186 ÷ 3 = 62 miles per hour. A hose that fills a 150-liter tank in 8 minutes flows 18.75 liters per minute.

How do you find the better buy?

⌄

Find the unit price of each package by dividing the price by the number of units, then pick the lower one. Cereal at 12 oz for $3.48 is $0.29 per oz and 18 oz for $4.99 is $0.28 per oz, so the larger box is the better buy.

How do you convert a rate with unit analysis?

⌄

Multiply by a conversion factor written as a fraction so the old unit cancels. 120 feet per minute × (1 minute over 60 seconds) = 2 feet per second.

Why is a percent a rate?

⌄

A percent is a rate per 100. On a hundred grid each square is 1 percent, so 37 shaded squares are 37%, 37/100 or 0.37.
