Speed and Velocity
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Speed and Velocity" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on forces and motion, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and speed and motion never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2 pages in this set
6th grade science worksheet: define speed, velocity and acceleration in a chart, then classify six statements about motion. Answer key included. Part of our speed and motion collection.
How do I use this worksheet?
Cover the wanted letter on the triangle to show which formula to use, then have students write the units with every answer. On the graph, ask students to describe each segment in words before they calculate.
What students will practice
- Students will define speed, velocity and acceleration and give the unit for each in a chart.
- Students will tell whether each quantity includes a direction.
- Students will classify six statements, such as a bus slowing at its stop, by the word they describe.

FAQ
How do I use this speed and motion worksheet?
⌄
Cover the wanted letter on the triangle to show which formula to use, then have students write the units with every answer. On the graph, ask students to describe each segment in words before they calculate.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Define speed, velocity and acceleration in a chart, then classify six statements about motion. The directions on the page read: Read the text about speed, velocity and acceleration. Then use it to complete page 2. An answer key is included.
Can I use this speed and motion worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade forces and motion, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with speed and motion. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does the slope of a distance-time graph show?
⌄
The slope shows speed, and a steeper line means a faster speed. A flat line means the person is stopped, and a line that slopes down means the person is moving back toward the start.
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
⌄
Speed tells how fast an object moves and does not include direction. Velocity is speed in a given direction, so two cars at 50 km/h going opposite ways have the same speed but different velocities.
What is acceleration?
⌄
Acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the time the change takes, measured in m/s². A skateboarder who speeds up from 2 m/s to 6 m/s in 2 seconds has an acceleration of 2 m/s².
