Clear or Unclear Pronoun?
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Clear or Unclear Pronoun?" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.1.D. If your student is a year younger but already steady on pronouns, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and vague pronouns never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Mark 9 bold pronouns clear or unclear, draw arrows to antecedents and rewrite the 3 unclear ones. The directions on the page read: In Part A, read the bold pronoun. Write C if it clearly refers to one word or U if it could refer to more than one. For each C, draw an arrow from the pronoun to its antecedent. An answer key is included.
Can I use this vague pronouns worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade pronouns, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with vague pronouns. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What makes a pronoun vague?
⌄
A pronoun is vague when it could refer to two or more words, or to no word at all. In Ms. Rao told Elena that she had won the poetry contest, she could mean Ms. Rao or Elena.
How do you fix a vague pronoun?
⌄
Replace the pronoun with the noun it means, or reword the sentence. Grandpa lifted the box onto the shelf, and then it fell becomes and then the box fell.
Is this a vague pronoun?
⌄
It is vague when this points to a whole idea instead of one word. Fix Vague Pronouns rewrites Mia missed the bus, and this made her late as Mia was late because she missed the bus.
