Area and Perimeter of Rectilinear Shapes
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Area and Perimeter of Rectilinear Shapes" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.G.A.1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and area and perimeter of polygons never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: find the perimeter and area of 6 L, T and U shaped figures, such as a 15 ft by 9 ft L shape. Answer key included. Part of our area and perimeter of polygons geometry collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Have students name each shape and write its formula before they calculate. On the rectilinear and composite pages, ask them to draw the line that splits each shape, and use the word problem page last.
What students will practice
- Students will find the perimeter and area of 6 rectilinear shapes.
- Students will split L, T and U shapes into rectangles, as in the 13 in by 3 in T shape.
- Students will add every side length to find perimeters such as 52 yd.

FAQ
How do I use this area and perimeter of polygons worksheet?
⌄
Have students name each shape and write its formula before they calculate. On the rectilinear and composite pages, ask them to draw the line that splits each shape, and use the word problem page last.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Find the perimeter and area of 6 L, T and U shaped figures, such as a 15 ft by 9 ft L shape. Split a rectilinear shape into rectangles to find its area. The directions on the page read: Find the perimeter and the area of each shape. An answer key is included.
Can I use this area and perimeter of polygons worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with area and perimeter of polygons. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you find the area of a trapezoid?
⌄
Add the two parallel bases, multiply by the height and take half: A = 1/2 × (b1 + b2) × h. A trapezoid with bases 9 m and 15 m and a height of 8 m has an area of 96 square meters.
Why do you use the height and not the slanted side?
⌄
Area counts square units straight up from the base, so it needs the perpendicular height. A parallelogram with a base of 9 ft, a height of 8 ft and a slanted side of 10 ft has an area of 72 square feet.
How do you find the area of a composite figure?
⌄
Split it into rectangles and triangles, find each area and add. Ben's deck is a 10 ft by 8 ft rectangle with a triangle point, and the whole deck is 15 ft long, so its area is 80 + 20 = 100 square feet.
How do you find the perimeter of a rectilinear shape?
⌄
Add every side length around the outside. On Area and Perimeter of Rectilinear Shapes, the L shape with sides 9, 3, 5, 5, 4 and 8 cm has a perimeter of 34 cm.
