Find the Area of Right Triangles
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Find the Area of Right Triangles" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.G.A.1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and area of triangles never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: find the area of 6 right triangles from their legs, such as 7 in and 5 in, writing halves as decimals. Answer key included. Part of our area of triangles geometry collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Review why a triangle is half of a parallelogram before students start. Ask them to write the formula with the numbers in place for each triangle, then check units.
What students will practice
- Students will find the area of 6 right triangles with A = 1/2 × a × b.
- Students will use the two legs that meet at the right angle, such as 12 cm and 8 cm.
- Students will write half square units as decimals, as in 17.5 and 49.5.

FAQ
How do I use this area of triangles worksheet?
⌄
Review why a triangle is half of a parallelogram before students start. Ask them to write the formula with the numbers in place for each triangle, then check units.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Find the area of 6 right triangles from their legs, such as 7 in and 5 in, writing halves as decimals. The legs of a right triangle meet at the right angle. Its area is A = 1 2 × a × b. The directions on the page read: Find the area of each right triangle. Write halves as decimals. An answer key is included.
Can I use this area of triangles worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with area of triangles. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
Why is the area of a triangle half of base times height?
⌄
Two copies of the same triangle fit together to make a parallelogram with the same base and height. The parallelogram's area is b × h, so one triangle is half of that.
What is the height of a right triangle?
⌄
The two legs meet at the right angle, so one leg is the base and the other is the height. A right triangle with legs of 12 cm and 8 cm has an area of 1/2 × 12 × 8 = 48 square cm.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. Both area of triangles sheets have an answer key.
