Draw Polygons on the Coordinate Plane

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Draw Polygons on the Coordinate Plane" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.G.A.3. If your student is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and coordinate plane never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Draw Polygons on the Coordinate Plane
Draw Polygons on the Coordinate Plane

6th grade math worksheet: draw rectangle ABCD and right triangle PQR on a grid and find side lengths, perimeter and area. Answer key included. Part of our coordinate plane geometry collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Begin with Plot Points on the Coordinate Plane so students can read ordered pairs. Then use the reflection and distance pages before the perimeter and area pages, which all rely on finding side lengths from coordinates.

What students will practice

  • Students will plot and connect the vertices of a rectangle and a right triangle on a coordinate grid.
  • Students will find side lengths from coordinates, such as AB = 9 units.
  • Students will find the perimeter of 28 units and areas of 45 and 24 square units.

FAQ

How do I use this coordinate plane worksheet?

⌄

Begin with Plot Points on the Coordinate Plane so students can read ordered pairs. Then use the reflection and distance pages before the perimeter and area pages, which all rely on finding side lengths from coordinates.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Draw rectangle ABCD and right triangle PQR on a grid and find side lengths, perimeter and area. To find the length of a side that is horizontal or vertical, count the units between its endpoints or subtract their coordinates. The directions on the page read: Plot and label each vertex, then connect the vertices in order. Find the side lengths, then the perimeter or right angle and the area. An answer key is included.

Can I use this coordinate plane worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with coordinate plane. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you plot a point like (−4, 2)?

⌄

Start at the origin, move 4 units left because x is −4, then 2 units up because y is 2. The point lands in Quadrant II.

What happens to a point reflected across the x axis?

⌄

The x coordinate stays the same and the y coordinate changes sign. (3, 5) reflected across the x axis is (3, −5), and across the y axis it is (−3, 5).

How do you find the side lengths of a polygon on the coordinate plane?

⌄

For a horizontal or vertical side, count the units or subtract the coordinates. In rectangle ABCD with A(−4, 3) and B(5, 3), side AB is 9 units long. When a side crosses an axis, add the distances, so (−3, 1) to (4, 1) is 3 + 4 = 7 units.

How do you find the area of a triangle on the coordinate plane?

⌄

Use a horizontal side as the base and the vertical distance from the third vertex as the height. Triangle JKL with J(−5, −2), K(5, −2) and L(1, 3) has a base of 10 units and a height of 5 units, so its area is 25 square units.
