Surface Area of Cubes Using Nets
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Surface Area of Cubes Using Nets" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.G.A.4. If your student is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and surface area with nets never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: find one face area and the surface area of 4 cubes with edges like 5 cm, 3.5 in and 8 ft. Answer key included. Part of our surface area with nets geometry collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with Match Nets to Three-Dimensional Figures and the grid paper page so students see every face. Paper nets that students cut out and fold help on the pyramid and triangular prism pages.
What students will practice
- Students will find the surface area of 4 cubes as 6 times the area of one face.
- Students will label the edge length on a blank net when a cube is drawn as a solid.
- Students will work with decimal edges, such as 6.5 cm giving 253.5 square centimeters.

FAQ
How do I use this surface area with nets worksheet?
⌄
Start with Match Nets to Three-Dimensional Figures and the grid paper page so students see every face. Paper nets that students cut out and fold help on the pyramid and triangular prism pages.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Find one face area and the surface area of 4 cubes with edges like 5 cm, 3.5 in and 8 ft. A cube has 6 matching square faces, so its surface area is 6 times the area of one face. The directions on the page read: Find the area of one face and the surface area of each cube. When a cube is drawn as a solid, first write its edge length on one edge of the blank net. Use the work space. An answer key is included.
Can I use this surface area with nets worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with surface area with nets. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is surface area?
⌄
Surface area is the total area of all the faces of a solid, measured in square units. Unfolding the solid into a net shows every face, so the surface area is the area of the whole net.
How do you find the surface area of a rectangular prism from a net?
⌄
Opposite faces match, so find the area of each of the three pairs and add. A 6 cm by 3 cm by 4 cm prism has pairs of 24, 48 and 36 square cm, for 108 square cm.
How do you find the surface area of a square pyramid?
⌄
Add the area of the square base to the area of the 4 triangles, using the slant height as each triangle's height. A pyramid with a 6 cm base and a 5 cm slant height has 36 + 60 = 96 square cm.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 8 surface area with nets sheets have an answer key that shows the face areas and the total.
