Volume and Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Volume and Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and volume & surface area of rectangular prisms never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Volume and Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders

6th grade math worksheet: find the volume and surface area of 2 cylinders and a rectangular prism, such as r = 3 cm and h = 8 cm. Answer key included. Part of our volume & surface area of rectangular prisms geometry collection.

How do I use this worksheet?

Start with the whole number page and have students list the three face pairs before adding. Move to the fraction and decimal pages next, and save the cylinder page for students ready for circle formulas.

What students will practice

  • Students will find the volume and surface area of 2 cylinders and 1 rectangular prism.
  • Students will use V = π × r × r × h and use 3.14 for pi on cylinders.
  • Students will find a radius from a diameter of 5 in and round to the nearest hundredth.

FAQ

How do I use this volume & surface area of rectangular prisms worksheet?

⌄

Start with the whole number page and have students list the three face pairs before adding. Move to the fraction and decimal pages next, and save the cylinder page for students ready for circle formulas.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Find the volume and surface area of 2 cylinders and a rectangular prism, such as r = 3 cm and h = 8 cm. The directions on the page read: Find the volume and the surface area of each solid. Use 3.14 for π and the work space. Round cylinder answers to the nearest hundredth. An answer key is included.

Can I use this volume & surface area of rectangular prisms worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with volume & surface area of rectangular prisms. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you find the volume of a rectangular prism?

⌄

Multiply the length, width and height: V = l × w × h. A prism with edges 2 1/2 in, 3 in and 1 1/2 in has a volume of 11 1/4 cubic inches.

How do you find the surface area of a rectangular prism?

⌄

Find the area of each pair of matching faces and add them: SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh. A prism 6 in by 4 in by 10 in has a surface area of 48 + 120 + 80 = 248 square inches.

How do you find the volume of a cylinder?

⌄

Multiply the area of the circle base by the height: V = π × r × r × h. With 3.14 for pi, a cylinder with a radius of 3 cm and a height of 8 cm has a volume of 226.08 cubic cm.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 4 volume and surface area sheets have an answer key.
