Convert Measurements Using Unit Analysis
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Convert Measurements Using Unit Analysis" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.RP.A.3.D. If your student is a year younger but already steady on measurement, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and convert customary units never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: convert 7 measurements with conversion factors, like 56 ounces to pounds and 3 gallons to cups. Answer key included. Part of our convert customary units measurement collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Point out the fact box on each page and ask whether the new unit is larger or smaller before students multiply or divide. Use the mixed practice page as a review, and the unit analysis page to show why multiplying or dividing works.
What students will practice
- Students will write conversion factors so the old unit cancels in 7 measurements.
- Students will use two factors in a row, as in 72 inches to 2 yards.
- Students will write decimal answers when needed, such as 10 cups = 2.5 quarts.

FAQ
How do I use this convert customary units worksheet?
⌄
Point out the fact box on each page and ask whether the new unit is larger or smaller before students multiply or divide. Use the mixed practice page as a review, and the unit analysis page to show why multiplying or dividing works.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Convert 7 measurements with conversion factors, like 56 ounces to pounds and 3 gallons to cups. The directions on the page read: Use the chart. Write a conversion factor in each pair of boxes so the old unit cancels. Then multiply and write the answer. Write a decimal when the answer is not a whole number. An answer key is included.
Can I use this convert customary units worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade measurement, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with convert customary units. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How many feet are in a mile?
⌄
There are 5,280 feet in a mile and 1,760 yards in a mile. So 2 mi = 10,560 ft and 4 mi = 7,040 yd.
How do you convert with mixed units?
⌄
Change the larger unit first, then add the smaller unit. 4 ft 8 in = 4 × 12 + 8 = 56 in, and 20 pt 1 c = 20 × 2 + 1 = 41 c.
How do you convert units with unit analysis?
⌄
Multiply by a conversion factor written as a fraction so the old unit cancels. 3 gallons × (4 quarts over 1 gallon) × (4 cups over 1 quart) = 48 cups.
Is a conversion fact box on every page?
⌄
Yes. Each sheet prints the facts it needs, such as 16 oz = 1 lb and 2,000 lb = 1 T, so students can convert without memorizing every fact. All 8 sheets have an answer key.
