Limiting Factors and Carrying Capacity

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Limiting Factors and Carrying Capacity" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers NGSS MS-LS2-1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on ecosystems, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and populations and invasive species never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade science worksheet: read a model graph of an island deer herd to find carrying capacity and predict the effect of wolves. Answer key included. Part of our populations and invasive species ecosystems collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Have students find where the deer graph levels off before they answer questions about carrying capacity. After the zebra mussel sheet, ask students to name the change that started the chain of effects.

What students will practice

  • Students will list food, water and space as limiting factors for an island deer herd.
  • Students will read a model graph to find the carrying capacity and when growth was fastest.
  • Students will predict what would happen to the herd if a pair of wolves arrived.

FAQ

How do I use this populations and invasive species worksheet?

⌄

Have students find where the deer graph levels off before they answer questions about carrying capacity. After the zebra mussel sheet, ask students to name the change that started the chain of effects.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a model graph of an island deer herd to find carrying capacity and predict the effect of wolves. The directions on the page read: Read the text. Then use it to answer the questions on page 2. An answer key is included.

Can I use this populations and invasive species worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade ecosystems, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with populations and invasive species. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are examples of limiting factors?

⌄

On the island deer sheet, food, water and space limit the herd before any predators arrive. Predators can also be a limiting factor, and a drought that kills plants lowers the number of deer the island can support.

What is an invasive species?

⌄

An invasive species is a living thing that is brought to a new place, where it spreads and causes harm. Zebra mussels, native near the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, were first found in the Great Lakes in 1988.

How can people slow the spread of zebra mussels?

⌄

Boaters are asked to clean, drain and dry their boats before moving them to another lake, because tiny young mussels can travel in the water left inside a boat.
