Area and Perimeter of Floor Plans

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Area and Perimeter of Floor Plans" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core 3.MD.D.8. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and area and perimeters of rectangles never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this area and perimeters of rectangles worksheet?

⌄

Print the page and read the directions with your child: Count the squares to find the area of each room. Then add the side lengths to find the perimeter. When they finish, check the work together with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

A note explains that area is the number of square units inside a shape and perimeter is the distance around it. A house floor plan on a grid has five rooms: a kitchen, a living room, an office, a bedroom and a bath. Children fill in a table with each room's area and perimeter, and a bonus asks for the area of the whole house. The directions on the page read: Count the squares to find the area of each room. Then add the side lengths to find the perimeter. An answer key is included.

Can I use this area and perimeters of rectangles worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with area and perimeters of rectangles. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How are area and perimeter different?

⌄

Area counts the squares inside a shape and is written in square units. Perimeter adds the lengths of all the sides and is written in units.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. Both sheets have an answer key.

What geometry do 3rd graders learn?

⌄

3rd graders sort shapes by their attributes and see that squares, rectangles and rhombuses are all quadrilaterals (CCSS 3.G.A.1). They find area by counting unit squares and by multiplying length and width (3.MD.C.7) and find the perimeter of rectangles and irregular shapes (3.MD.D.8). These pages also cover angles, polygons and symmetry.

What is a line of symmetry?

⌄

A line of symmetry is a line that folds a figure into two halves that match exactly. On Draw Every Line of Symmetry, a square has 4 lines, a rectangle that is not a square has 2, a regular hexagon has 6 and a parallelogram that is not a rectangle has none. Lines of symmetry are named in CCSS 4.G.A.3, so these pages give 3rd graders an early start.

Do these 3rd grade geometry worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 30 sheets have an answer key, including the area, perimeter and symmetry pages.
