Sentences and Paragraphs Lesson Plan for 2nd Grade

Lesson steps

1. Build the background (5 min)
Bring the real tool: a ruler, a clock, coins, a tally chart. Ask what sentences and paragraphs is used for before what it is called.
2. Read aloud and think aloud (I do) (10 min)
Model sentences and paragraphs with the actual object, reading it aloud twice. Deliberately misread it once so students learn that checking is part of the method.
3. Guided practice (we do) (12 min)
Read a second passage together. This time students find the evidence and you record it. Push every answer back to the text with "what words told you that?"
4. Independent practice (you do) (15 min)
Hand out "Sentences". Students read and answer on their own. Circulate and ask individuals to point to the line in the text that supports their answer.
5. Share and close (5 min)
Two or three students share an answer and the evidence behind it. Restate sentences and paragraphs one final time in the students' own words, not yours.

Check for understanding

Collect the practice pages and sort them into three piles: fluent, developing, and not yet. Any student in the third pile needs sentences and paragraphs retaught in a small group before the class moves on.

Differentiation

Extra support. Students who stall: pull them into a small group and rebuild sentences and paragraphs with concrete materials or a simpler text before asking for the written work again. Do not send the page home as homework, it will just rehearse the misunderstanding.

Extension. Students who finish early: ask them to write their own sentences and paragraphs problem for a partner to solve, then check the partner's work. Creating a problem is harder than solving one and it surfaces whether they really understand sentences and paragraphs.

What's the difference between the Sentences and Paragraphs worksheets?

Sentences asks a child to pick the word bank word that best completes one sentence at a time, six separate items. Paragraphs raises the difficulty by embedding the same kind of blank inside a connected short story, where earlier sentences give clues that later blanks depend on. It's the same core skill, just tested with and without surrounding context to lean on.

Why use a word bank instead of asking my child to just write in a word?

A word bank keeps the task focused on meaning instead of spelling. At this stage we want your child thinking about which word fits the sentence, not stalling out over how to spell excited. Once that meaning-matching skill is solid, free writing without a word bank is a natural next step.

My child gets Sentences right but struggles with Paragraphs. Is that normal?

Very. A paragraph asks a child to hold onto information from earlier sentences while filling in a later blank, which is a bigger working-memory load than a single, self-contained sentence. If this is where your child is stuck, try reading the whole paragraph aloud once before filling in anything, so the story's meaning is already in their head before they start choosing words.
