Plant Growth Experiment Data

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Plant Growth Experiment Data" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers NGSS MS-LS1-5. If your student is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and reproduction and plant growth never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this reproduction and plant growth worksheet?

⌄

Read the reproduction passage together, then have students give their own example of each kind. For the bean plant data, have students write the conclusion only after the bar graph is drawn.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Graph sample week 4 bean plant heights for 0 to 12 hours of light and name the variables. The directions on the page read: Read the investigation and study the table. Draw one bar for each group on the graph. An answer key is included.

Can I use this reproduction and plant growth worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with reproduction and plant growth. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction?

⌄

In asexual reproduction one parent produces offspring identical to it, which is fast but creates no variation. In sexual reproduction two parents each give half of the offspring's genes, which is slower but creates variation.

What are examples of asexual reproduction?

⌄

Sexual and Asexual Reproduction lists bacteria splitting by binary fission, yeast and hydra budding, strawberry runners and an eye on a potato sprouting into a plant.

What are the variables in a plant growth experiment?

⌄

In Plant Growth Experiment Data the independent variable is hours of light and the dependent variable is plant height. The type of bean, pot size, soil, water and temperature stay the same.
