About these printable math tools

These are the manipulatives you reach for when a concept is not landing. A number line for a child still counting on fingers, fraction strips for the moment thirds and fourths stop being abstract, a blank clock face for the third attempt at quarter past.

Printed tools have one real advantage over plastic ones: a child can write on them. Mark the jumps on a number line, shade the strips, draw the hands. That written record is what you look at afterwards to work out where the misunderstanding actually is.

Frequently asked questions

Should I laminate these math tools?
For anything a class will reuse daily, yes. Laminate and use dry-erase markers. For diagnostic work, print fresh copies instead, because you want the child's marks preserved to see how they solved it.
Which math tool helps most with place value?
A place value chart paired with base-ten blocks. The chart gives the columns a name, the blocks give the quantity a size, and moving between the two is what makes regrouping click rather than being a memorised rule.
Are these aligned to Common Core?
The tools themselves are supports rather than standards-tagged practice, so they are not assigned a CCSS code. The worksheets they support are aligned, and each math tool page links to the relevant practice.
