Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Persuasive Letter Should School Start Later" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on opinion writing, the page still works. FAQ

How do I use this persuasive essays worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

A persuasive letter frame on the question Should school start later in the morning? It begins Dear Principal and has sections for the claim, two reasons, the other side and a closing, each with a sentence starter such as One reason is and Some may say, but. The directions on the page read: Should school start later in the morning? Write a letter to your principal. Use the sentence starters under each part to help you.

Can I use this persuasive essays worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade opinion writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with persuasive essays. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How is a persuasive essay different from an opinion essay?

⌄

Both state a claim with reasons. A persuasive piece is written to move a reader, so it thinks about the audience, like a newspaper's readers, and often asks them to act or agree.

What goes in a letter to the editor?

⌄

A greeting, the issue, your claim, reasons with evidence, a counterclaim with your answer and a closing with your signature. The planner follows that order.

Why plan both sides of a debate?

⌄

Knowing the other side's strongest point helps your child answer it. The debate planner lists 3 reasons for yes and 3 for no on a four-day school week before your child picks a side and explains why it is stronger.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

The claim and evidence page and the animals page have one. The two planners are open, so check that every reason has evidence and the other side gets an answer.
