How-To Writing My Bedtime Routine

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"How-To Writing My Bedtime Routine" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and informative writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this informative writing worksheet?

⌄

Print the page and read the directions with your child: Write one step of your bedtime routine in each box. Then use your plan and the order words to write a how-to paragraph on the lines. Afterward, talk about what they wrote or drew.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

A note explains that a how-to paragraph tells steps in order and that order words help the reader follow along. Four planning boxes, First, Next, Then and Last, come before writing lines headed How I Get Ready for Bed. The directions on the page read: Write one step of your bedtime routine in each box. Then use your plan and the order words to write a how-to paragraph on the lines.

Can I use this informative writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with informative writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does 2nd grade informative writing require?

⌄

CCSS W.2.2 asks second graders to introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement. The All About sheets supply fact cards or a fact box so students practice organizing and writing them, and the how-to sheets ask for steps children already know.

What is a topic sentence?

⌄

A topic sentence names what the paragraph is about, usually in the first sentence, like "Owls are birds that hunt at night." The facts that follow tell more about the topic.

What goes in a how-to piece?

⌄

A list of materials, then steps in order that start with time-order words like first, next, then and last, and a closing sentence. The how-to sheets show a short model by a made-up student, such as how to fold a napkin, before children write their own.

Do the informative worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Eleven do. Ten All About sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model paragraph, and Number the Steps to Repot a Plant has a key for the step order. The 8 how-to sheets and the 6 All About report plans have no key, since each child writes in their own words.
