Opinion Writing Homework Before or After Dinner

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Opinion Writing Homework Before or After Dinner" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on opinion writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and writing opinion paragraphs never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this writing opinion paragraphs worksheet?

⌄

Print the page and read the directions with your child: Circle your choice. Fill in the organizer. Then use it to write your opinion paragraph on the lines. Afterward, talk about what they wrote or drew.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

An opinion writing page on the topic Should kids do homework before dinner or after dinner? Children circle Before or After, then fill in an organizer with their opinion, two reasons with a detail each and a conclusion that says the opinion again in a new way, before writing the paragraph on the lines. The directions on the page read: Circle your choice. Fill in the organizer. Then use it to write your opinion paragraph on the lines.

Can I use this writing opinion paragraphs worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade opinion writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with writing opinion paragraphs. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What goes in a 3rd grade opinion paragraph?

⌄

An opinion sentence, two or three reasons, an example for each reason and a closing sentence that says the opinion again. The planners give a box for each part, so children fill in short notes before they draft (W.3.1).

What is a hook?

⌄

A hook is a first sentence that grabs the reader, like a question or a surprising fact. One planner asks for two hook tries, a question and a fact, and two closing tries, so your child can pick the stronger one.

Can a letter or a poster be opinion writing?

⌄

Yes. A letter to the principal and a poster both try to get the reader to agree. The letter planner has a greeting, the change you want, two reasons with examples, a polite closing and a signature. The poster planner has a headline, a picture and three reasons.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

5 of the 23 sheets have an answer key. The planners and open writing pages have none, since each child writes their own opinion. Check that every reason answers why and that the closing restates the opinion.
