Write About My School Day
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Write About My School Day" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and personal narratives never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

1st grade writing worksheet: draw 4 pictures of your school day and finish sentences that start First, Next, Then and Last. Part of our personal narratives writing collection.
How do I use this worksheet?

FAQ
How do I use this personal narratives worksheet?
⌄
Print the page and read the directions with your child: Think about your school day. In each box, draw a picture. Then finish the sentence that starts with the order word. Afterward, talk about what they wrote or drew.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
A note explains that order words tell what happens first, next, then and last. Four numbered boxes, First, Next, Then and Last, each have room for a picture and a sentence starter with that order word. The directions on the page read: Think about your school day. In each box, draw a picture. Then finish the sentence that starts with the order word.
Can I use this personal narratives worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with personal narratives. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a personal narrative in 1st grade?
⌄
A personal narrative is a true story about something that happened to the writer. CCSS W.1.3 asks 1st graders to tell two or more events in order, add a detail, use time words like first, next and last, and give a sense of closure. Three sentences with a beginning, a middle and an end make a strong 1st grade personal narrative.
How is a personal narrative different from a made-up story?
⌄
A personal narrative is true and is told with I, like I lost my mitten at the park. A made-up story can have a talking animal or magic. These pages ask only for things that really happened to your child, and the 1st grade story writing pages cover made-up stories.
Why does each page have a model?
⌄
Each sheet starts with a short model by a made-up student on a different topic, such as painting a birdhouse or feeding a neighbor's cat. The model shows how the printed starters turn into whole sentences without giving away your child's own story.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
No. Every child writes about their own life, so there is no single right answer. Check that the story tells what happened in order, uses the printed starters and ends with how it turned out or how your child felt.
