Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

Natural selection is the process in which individuals with helpful traits are more likely to survive and pass those traits on. These three 6th grade worksheets, each with an answer key, use finches, moths and animal adaptations. Natural Selection follows medium ground finches through the 1977 drought on Daphne Major, Peppered Moth Data has students graph model data that is made up for practice, and Structural and Behavioral Adaptations sorts 12 adaptations. The finch and moth sheets practice MS-LS4-4 and MS-LS4-6.

Frequently Asked Questions

During the 1977 drought on Daphne Major, finches with large, deep beaks could crack the hard seeds that were left, and finches with small beaks struggled. The survivors passed on their beak size, so the next generation had larger beaks, on average.
